What are ACES? Adverse Childhood Experiences such as separation from a parent, abuse, death of a family member, natural disaster, war, incarcertation of a family member, toxic stress in the community due to unemployment, inadequate housing,etc., harms the mind, and the body, often causing lifetime physical and mental health issues. A characteristic of biological, phychological,family,commuity or cultural level that precedes and is associated with a higher likelihood of problem outcomes is often referred to as a Risk Factor. Research has shown that mitigating or reducing Risk Factors/ ACES reduces the risk of youth substance use. Englewood Community Coalition/Creative Arts works to mitigate and reduce Risk Factors/ACES. |
